Job Description

The Director of Technology Operations for Medical Affairs & Medical Writing within our DTE organization has end-to-end ownership of the technology platforms enabling core capabilities within Vertex's Global Medical Affairs and Medical Writing business functions. Overseeing a team of highly specialized technology personal, they are accountable for day-to-day operations and drive the complete lifecycle management of a portfolio of digital platforms, including CRM Platform; Medical Information Platform; Publication Management Platform; Grants & Investigator Sponsored Studies Platform; Managed Access Program; Medical Web Portal; Digital Asset Management; Analytics & Reporting, etc. This role will also be responsible, in partnership with the DTE Portfolio & Business Operations team, for executing the technology strategy for their assigned portfolio by leading the evaluation, selection, and implementation of technology solutions defined in their technology roadmap.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Business relationship management and end-to-end ownership of the technology platforms enabling core capabilities for Vertex's Global Medical Affairs & Medical Writing business functions.
  • Directs the complete lifecycle of Medical Affairs and Medical Writing technology solutions, including defining business needs, project planning, vendor selection, development, deployment, and end user adoption and providing ongoing management and functional oversight ensuring reliable, scalable, and compliant day-to-day operation of all related systems.
  • Drives the realization of the technology strategy by partnering with the DTE Portfolio & Business Operations team and overseeing the execution of technology initiatives defined within their technology roadmap.
  • Understands the evolving needs of the business, appropriately prioritizes digital demands, and selects appropriate solutions, tools, and platforms to be deployed.
  • Leads a team of technology platform owners and analysts ensuring new features and functionality to better serve our business are identified, designed, and implemented in alignment with key business areas. Measures and communicate business value (e.g., improved efficiency).
  • Lead full project lifecycle from intake through deployment, as well as communication, change management and team mobilization/ onboarding.
  • Establish, track and report on project/program status, value drivers and financial impact.
  • Pro-actively identifies and mitigates key cross-functional and vendor issues independently with limited need to escalate.
  • Enhance and improve internal processes and procedures related to demand management, resource management, project delivery, platform releases and ongoing operational support.
  • Directs and coaches team members to achieve organizational objectives, fostering teamwork, demonstrating efficient and clear decision making, embedding principles and values that place patients and quality first, and maintaining a leadership presence throughout.
  • Stays current with new developments in drug development, Medical Affairs, Medical Writing, and regulatory guidance, including global regulatory standards for data and document solutions.
  • Works closely with DTE Compliance, Internal Audit and Quality Assurance groups as needed to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and GxP regulations, as well as our DTE system lifecycle and change management requirements.
  • Develops and manages budgets for projects and the department, and as a people manager within the organization, has financial accountabilities and human resource responsibilities for assigned staff.


Skills & Experience
  • At least 10 years of technical leadership experience building high-performing technical & operations-based teams with business acumen, consultative skills, and results orientation.
  • Substantial program/ project management, demand management, resource management and system life cycle expertise with a proven track record of on-time project delivery for large, cross-functional, and complex projects with global stakeholders.
  • Strong process orientation with demonstrated expertise in continuous improvement and change management.
  • 5+ years of experience developing and maintaining validated computer systems
  • Demonstrated experience managing technical teams that include a mix of resources that are employees, outsourced managed service providers, and consultants who are located both locally and offshore
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex operational issues, to develop relevant and realistic recommendations and plans, and to drive projects to consistently meet multiple project deadlines while mitigating risks.
  • Customer focused, with ability to maintain an independent view. Proven ability to interpret internal and external customer needs, negotiate and influence.
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to simplify complex concepts, produce concise & simple impactful summaries and communicate to the highest levels in the organization as well as diverse cross-functional audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop relationships with key stakeholders, good conflict management and negotiation skills.
  • Emotionally intelligent; realizes and manages the impact of personal style on others.
  • Strong preference for candidates with one or more of the following:
    • Previous work experience in the biopharmaceutical industry
    • Understanding of the business, process, and supporting systems related to Medical Affairs and Medical Writing
    • Experience maintaining the validated state of systems, being inspection ready, and directly participating in audits


Education

Bachelor's degree in technology discipline or equivalent required; Master's degree or certification(s) preferred in Business, Science, Technology or Strategy
